Parents,
Listed below are some great activities to help strengthen small motor muscles in your child’s hands. These activities will help make writing, cutting and other activities easier for him/her to do in school.

  • Pick up and sort objects such as blocks, spools, coins, beans, cotton balls, buttons, straws, nails, nuts, bolts, etc and place them into containers.
  • Pick up objects such as blocks, cotton balls, and various small objects using various sized tongs/strawberry pickers. Have your child transfer these objects between containers.
  • Stack objects such as coins, cards, checkers, blocks, etc.
  • Screw and unscrew objects such as nuts and bolts, caps from jars, etc.
  • String beads onto a shoelace or pipe cleaner.
  • Cut straight and curved lines or shapes that you have drawn on paper. Have them cut out coupons or Cartoons that come in the Sunday paper.
  • Crumble a paper in a small ball and then flick it with their fingers.
  • Play with play dough.
  • Wind thread on a spool.
  • Put rubber bands on various sized containers.
  • Use tweezers to pick up small objects.
  • Move spoonfuls of small objects from one bowl to another.
  • Fasten buttons, zippers and hooks,
  • Trace/write letters.
  • Put keys into locks to open doors or padlocks.
  • Put paper clips onto paper.
  • Use a stapler-with supervision of course.
