Take A Look!!!

In second grade, we are establishing routines and helping students grow in taking responsiblity for themselves.  Students have their own assignment notebooks to help keep track of homework and important information.  This is also a great place for parent/teacher communication.

First Quarter:

Science - We are learning about "Pebbles, Sand, and Silt."  There are lots of investigations to explore and observe like real scientists.

Social Studies - We are learning about "Groups We Belong To."  This includes our families, school, and neighborhood.  We are learning about goods/services, laws/citizens, directions, and more.

Writing Workshop/Language Arts - We are learning about the "Writing Process."  This includes prewriting, writing, revising, editing, and publishing.  We will continue to use these steps in our writing throughout the year.

Reading - We have been practicing being independent during "Read to Self."  Students are responsible for recording what books he/she reads, using a strategy bookmark, and following through on "jobs" that are given during guided reading groups with the teacher that need to be finished on their own.  Our reading strategy focus has been "Monitor and Clarify" with fiction and nonfiction.  Adults make sure they understand what they are reading almost without thinking.  We are specifically working on strategies of what to do when you don't know a word or something doesn't make sense, like rereading, reading on, looking at the pictures, and asking for help.

Spelling - We are following an 8 day routine that includes writing the words on cards, sorting words, a hands-on activity, and more.

Math - Practice, practice, practice those basic addition math facts.  In second grade, we focus on different strategies to learn the facts.  By the end of the year, students will be given a 5 min. 100 fact test in addition and subtraction.  That is why we are practicing doing 20 facts in one minute.  We are also beginning Unit 2 in our math book.
